The work I do

Twenty-plus years inside B2B technology, as a marketing operator, CMO, and now advisor. SaaS platforms, industrial technology, cybersecurity, observability, post-acquisition integrations.

The pattern that runs through all of it: companies hit predictable inflection points, and the operators inside them rarely have the bandwidth or the outside view to navigate those moments while also running the business.

Most of my engagements last between two weeks and twelve months. I have never been the right person to be employee number forty.

Why I started Kate Ryan & Company

The honest answer is that I love this work. I love walking into a company in the middle of something hard, listening for what people aren’t quite saying, and finding the thing underneath.

The segmentation model that quietly stopped matching the buyer. The sales motion that was right at twenty people and wrong at eighty. The positioning story the founder still believes and the market stopped buying eighteen months ago.

The problems leadership teams are currently arguing about are rarely the real problems. The real ones are usually one or two layers down, and seeing them is the part I’m good at and the part I genuinely enjoy.

A few things I’ve come to believe: that strategy and execution are not separate jobs, and the people who can do both, and translate between them, are the ones companies actually need at inflection points. That pattern recognition is a real skill, and it compounds across companies in a way it can’t inside one.

I built Kate Ryan & Company around that shape. I plan to do this work for the next decade.

A few things I’m proud of

US Patent

Co-inventor on US Patent D1018617, Automated Storage and Retrieval Vehicle, issued March 2024.

Foundation Board

Board member, International 22q11.2 Foundation. My son was born with 22q, and the work this community does for families matters deeply to me.

CMSWire

CMSWire 2025 Contributor of the Year. The writing is downstream of the strategy work, not the other way around.

A note on the name

I was previously published and known professionally as Colleen Ciak. I got married in September 2024 and now go by Colleen Lonsberry.

CMSWire and LinkedIn are updated; some older citations and my X handle, @ColleenCiak, reflect the prior name. If we worked together before late 2024, that was me too.
